Your Attic Is Working Against You: Why Insulation Depth Matters in Arizona

In Arizona, your attic can become one of the hottest parts of your home. During the summer, intense sunlight heats the roof for hours, and that heat builds up above your living space. If your attic insulation is too low, uneven, compressed, or missing in areas, more of that heat can work its way toward the rooms below. Your air conditioner may be running perfectly and still struggle to keep your home comfortable because it is constantly fighting heat entering from above.

More Insulation Isn’t Just About Making It Thicker

What really matters is thermal resistance, or R-value. Insulation helps slow the movement of heat between your attic and your conditioned living space. When an attic is under-insulated, the thermal barrier protecting the home is weaker.

At Active Shield Insulation, we install Johns Manville Climate Pro® blown-in fiberglass insulation. Blown-in fiberglass works especially well in attics because it can cover large areas and fill around framing and other obstacles where gaps might otherwise occur.

For many of our attic insulation projects, we bring the insulation level to approximately R-38, depending on the home and existing conditions.

The Problem With an Attic That “Already Has Insulation”

Seeing insulation in your attic doesn’t necessarily mean you have enough.

Older insulation can be low in certain areas, disturbed from previous attic work, or simply below the level needed to provide the thermal resistance you’re looking for. Some homes also have noticeably different insulation depths from one section of the attic to another.

That’s why looking at the condition, coverage and depth of the insulation is important—not simply whether insulation is present.

Your AC Shouldn’t Have to Fight Your Attic

When your attic is properly insulated, it helps reduce heat transfer into your living space. That can help your home maintain a more consistent indoor temperature and reduce some of the workload placed on your cooling system.

Think of it this way: your AC creates the cool air. Your insulation helps keep Arizona heat from taking it away.

If certain rooms stay warmer than others, your AC seems to run constantly, or you simply haven’t looked at your attic insulation in years, it may be worth having it checked.
